Since 1972, Glen Hamilton has followed the Olympics and international sport. Back then, most Americans’ exposure to international sport was limited to NBC’s coverage of the Olympics every couple of years. With the advent of satellite television, events from all over the planet are available in a way that was once unimaginable. Too often today, the country’s sensibility seems stuck in the Cold War era, a million miles away from the contemporary state of international sport. With the end of the Cold War, America’s place in the world has changed. Our understanding of the games should change, too.
